Our small business, Sai Steel, is over in Mota Varachha in the Ghanshyam Nagar neighborhood. We deal mostly in steel rods and various metal parts that people need for their building projects. The shop is basically a large shed where we store everything to keep it from rusting too much. You can hear the sound of metal clanging against metal from down the street whenever we are moving stock around. It’s a heavy job, and my back usually feels it by the end of the week. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us who know the inventory well. The floor is concrete and usually covered in small scraps of iron and dust. We use a big heavy-duty cutter for some of the orders, which makes a lot of sparks and noise. It’s not a place where you’d want to wear your Sunday best, that’s for sure. We get all kinds of people coming in, from big contractors to guys just trying to fix a fence at home. We just write down the weights and the prices in a big ruled notebook we keep on the counter. There isn't any fancy computer system here; we prefer doing things the old-fashioned way. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living in Ghanshyam Nagar. We just keep our heads down and make sure the customers get exactly what they paid for.
