Being in Surat, Gujarat, means you’re always around some kind of trade. We handle the steel side of things here at Essar Steel. Our location is right in the heart of the city’s industrial rhythm. It’s not a quiet place. There is always the sound of trucks passing and the smell of exhaust and iron in the air. We don’t have a lot of bells and whistles. The office is just a place to sit down and handle the receipts. Most of our energy goes into the actual handling of the material. We’ve got stacks of steel that need to be sorted and moved almost every single day. It’s physically tiring work, but it’s what we know best. The heat in Gujarat can be a real struggle in the afternoons, so we usually take a bit of a break when the sun is at its highest. We aren’t trying to be the biggest or the most famous. We just want to make sure the work is finished by the end of the week. You’ll often find us arguing over a measurement or checking a delivery note twice just to be sure. It’s not perfect, and sometimes we make mistakes, but we fix them and move on. That’s just how a small operation like ours works in a city as busy as this one. We’ve been here a long while and we plan to stay right here and keep doing exactly what we are doing.
