Out here in Hazira, the air always feels heavy with industry. We are located at Room 36 in Hed Coloney, which is basically part of the Essar Steel setup. It’s a busy spot in Surat. Most of our day is spent looking at metal and making sure things are where they should be. It gets pretty noisy with the machinery going, so sometimes we have to shout a bit to hear each other. We don’t spend much time making the office look nice. It’s mostly just chairs, a few old desks, and a lot of logbooks. People come and go all day. Some are workers from nearby, others are just stopping by to check on a delivery. Gujarat is known for this kind of work, and we are right in the middle of it. We eat lunch together when we can, usually something quick before the next truck arrives. There’s no big secret to what we do. We just handle the steel and try to stay organized, even when things get chaotic. The colony itself is quite lived-in, so you see the same faces every morning. We’ve stayed in this room for a long time because it’s close to the action. It’s practical, if nothing else. Sometimes the power goes out, or the rain makes everything muddy, but we just deal with it and keep going. That is just the life of a business in this area.
