Make Over Unisex Salon sits right at the Main Chowk in Karan Nagar, which is one of the busiest spots in Srinagar. You can see the whole world passing by from our windows. We decided to do both men’s and women’s hair because that’s what the area needed. It is a simple setup with separate sections, nothing too complicated. The winters here get really cold, so we spend a lot of time making sure the place stays warm for whoever comes in. We get all kinds of people, from students at the nearby colleges to shopkeepers taking a break. It gets pretty loud at the chowk with all the cars and horns, but inside we just focus on the job. We have been doing this for a while now. The staff here are just local people who know how to handle a pair of scissors or a hair dryer. We don't have those big leather sofas or fancy coffee machines you see in the city malls. We just have some plastic chairs and old magazines to read while you wait. Sometimes the power goes out, which is normal for Srinagar, so we keep some battery lights ready. It’s an honest way to make a living. We see the seasons change through the front door, from the snow in January to the dusty summers. People come in looking a bit tired and leave looking a bit fresher, and that’s enough for us. We just keep working through the day.
