We operate out of 3/580 in Sakkavayal, which is near Melamannakkudi. Sakkottai Vegetables Farmers Producer Company Limited is made up of people who grow veggies around here. It’s a lot of work because vegetables are delicate and don’t last long once they’re picked. We have to move fast. Most of us are in the fields early, picking tomatoes or greens while it’s still cool out. Then we bring everything to the Sakkavayal spot to get it sorted. It’s a loud, busy place in the mornings. We aren't some big industrial farm with conveyors and high-tech sensors. We mostly use our hands and eyes to make sure things look good. Dealing with the markets can be stressful because prices change every single day. Some days you feel like you’re making progress, and other days it feels like you’re just spinning your wheels. We started this company to try and get a bit more control over where our produce goes. It’s been a learning curve for all of us. We have to handle the transport and the billing, which none of us really likes doing compared to being in the dirt. But it’s necessary to keep things going. We’re just regular folks from Melamannakkudi trying to do right by our families. The work is hard and the hours are long, but we’re used to it.
