Gita Niketan School

Up here in Shimla, specifically in Sunni Bhajji, the air is usually much cooler than the plains. Gita Niketan School is situated where you can see the hills all around. The road to get here is winding and can be a bit tricky when the weather is bad. We are used to the mountain life. The school building is simple, mostly made to keep the cold out during the winter months. We have students who walk quite a distance from the surrounding slopes to get to their classes. In the morning, you can see the mist hanging over the valley before the sun comes up properly. We don't have a massive campus, but we have enough room for the local kids to sit and do their work. The classrooms are basic with wooden desks that have seen better days. We keep a stove going when it gets really cold. The teachers and the staff all live nearby, so we are a close-knit group. We talk about the weather and the local roads a lot. It is a quiet existence for the most part, except for when the kids are out playing between lessons. We focus on the books and the writing. There is not much noise from traffic here, just the sound of the wind and the kids talking. It is a practical school for the families living in this part of the Shimla district. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
