About Indian Village Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Saharanpur
You can find us on Sarak Par Street in the town of Behat. Saharanpur is famous for its wood, and that’s exactly what we do here at Indian Village Handicrafts. Our workshop is usually covered in a fine layer of sawdust. You can hear the chisels hitting the wood all day long. It is a slow process making things by hand, but that’s the way it has always been done in this town. We have a few older men who have been carving since they were kids. Their hands are rough but they know exactly how to follow the grain of the wood. We don’t have a fancy showroom with glass cases. Everything is just stacked up on wooden shelves or sitting on the floor. It smells like fresh timber and polish in here. Sometimes the orders are for small things like boxes, and other times we are working on big screens or tables. The street outside is narrow and always full of cycles and people walking. We don’t really do any big advertising campaigns. People who appreciate this kind of work usually find their way to Behat eventually. We just keep our heads down and keep carving. It’s a quiet life mostly, except for the sound of the tools. We take pride in the fact that we aren't using big factory machines. Every piece we finish has its own little quirks and marks from the tools.
