Out here in Gumuda, in the Gunupur block of Rayagada, life moves at its own pace. We are the folks behind Madalashi Farmer Producer Company. It's really just a bunch of local farmers who decided to pool our resources together. If you come looking for us, you’ll find us right here in the village. We spend most of our days dealing with the land. The soil in this part of Orissa can be good if you treat it right. We grow what we can and try to help each other out with the logistics of it all. It’s not a fancy operation by any means. Our office is just a small spot where we keep our records and meet up to talk about the grain or the vegetables. We deal with the usual stuff farmers face, like the rain coming too late or the prices being lower than we hoped. We don’t have any marketing people or big plans to take over the world. We just want to keep our farms going and maybe get a better deal when we sell our stuff collectively. Most of us have been doing this since we were kids, learning from our fathers. It is a lot of sweat and long hours, but it is what we do. We are just local people trying to make a living from the ground beneath our feet.
