Down in Vadhu Priyadarshani Nagar, you’ll find us at Purohit Sweets. This neighborhood is where I grew up, so I know most of the families around here. The shop is part of my daily life, and has been for years. I wake up early, around five, to get the first batches of milk boiling. You have to stay focused when you’re making sweets, or you’ll burn the bottom of the pan. The shop itself is small and we don't have much room for fancy decorations. We just have the usual counters and a few stools for people to wait on. Priyadarshani Nagar is mostly residential, so it’s pretty quiet in the middle of the day, but it picks up when the schools let out. I handle the cooking and my younger brother handles the customers. We often argue about how much sugar to put in things, but we usually figure it out. It’s not always easy running a business with family, but we make it work. Sometimes we have leftovers at the end of the night, and we just share them with the neighbors. We don't have a big marketing plan or anything like that. We just try to make enough to keep the lights on and the shelves full. It’s a humble place, and we’re fine with that. Vadhu is a nice place to work, even if the days are long and the kitchen is hot.
