We started Mummy Its Yummy in Khadki 10 because we just liked cooking for people. It isn't a massive restaurant with a hundred tables. It’s more like a small kitchen where you can see everything being made right in front of you. We go to the market every morning to see what looks good and that’s what we end up cooking for the day. The stove is always on and there’s usually a pot of something bubbling away. Sometimes the smoke gets a bit thick, so we have to keep the back door open to let the air in. We use the same recipes we’ve used at home for years. There’s no secret to it, just putting the ingredients together and waiting for them to taste right. People from the nearby houses come by with their own tiffin boxes sometimes. We fill them up and they go on their way. It gets a bit cramped when three or four people are waiting at the same time, but nobody seems to mind the wait too much. We write the daily items on a small board outside. If we run out of gas or an ingredient, we just close early. It’s a simple way to run things. Khadki is a quiet enough place most of the time, and we like being part of the street here. It’s just me and my sister doing the work most days, and we like it that way.
