Jeevan Sweets

Jeevan Sweets is located in Kothrud, on Shivpuri Road inside Jain Nagar 2. It’s a quiet residential area for the most part, except for the school nearby. We get a lot of kids stopping by in the afternoon when their classes finish. They usually have just a few coins and want whatever is cheapest. It makes the shop very loud for about an hour. The rest of the day is pretty calm. We spend the mornings preparing the dough and boiling the milk. It’s a slow process that you can't really rush. We use a lot of old recipes that have been passed down, though we don't always measure things exactly. We go by how it looks and feels. The shop has a small bench outside where some of the older men sit and talk for hours. We don’t mind. It makes the place feel more alive. We’ve had the same refrigerator for fifteen years and it still makes a loud humming sound, but it keeps everything cold. Sometimes we forget to change the price tags when the cost of oil goes up, which causes a bit of confusion at the till. We just apologize and explain it. We’re not professionals, just local people trying to make a living in Jain Nagar. The street is lined with trees, so it stays relatively cool in the shade.
