If you walk through Kondhwa Budruk, you’ll find us at Deepak Sweets. We’ve been in this spot for a while. The kitchen is where we spend most of our time. It’s tucked away in the back. We start the day by checking the ingredients we have on hand. If we’re low on ghee or nuts, someone has to go out and get them. We make everything in small batches so it stays decent. The smells from the cooking usually drift out into the street. It’s a lot of standing on your feet all day. Sometimes my back hurts by the time we close up. The counter is usually covered with different trays. We don't use any fancy displays, just the same glass boxes we’ve had for years. People come in and ask what’s fresh today, and we tell them honestly. Sometimes the weather makes the sweets go soft, so we have to watch the humidity. Kondhwa Budruk is a busy area, so there’s always noise from the bikes and cars outside. We just ignore it and focus on the work. We have a small sink in the back for washing up, and it’s always full of pots. Cleaning takes almost as long as the cooking does. We close up once the sun goes down and everything is put away. It’s just a regular shop doing regular things every single day of the week.
