I've been at Bicameral Sweet in Katraj for a while now. The shop isn't anything special to look at, just a regular place on a regular street. I usually get here before the sun is fully up to start getting things ready for the day. The first thing I do is roll up the metal shutters, which always make a loud clanging sound that echoes in the quiet morning. Then I start the cleaning. I sweep the floor and wipe down the glass display cases. They always get covered in smudges and fingerprints by the time we close. Katraj is a busy area, so as the morning goes on, the noise from the traffic starts to get louder. I spend a lot of my time just standing behind the counter, watching the buses and cars go by. We have different kinds of sweets arranged in the trays. I have to move them around sometimes to make room for new batches that arrive. The shop can get quite warm in the afternoon when the sun hits the front window. I usually turn on the old ceiling fan, but it doesn't do much more than move the hot air around. I know most of the people who come in. They live in the apartments nearby and stop in when they are heading home from work. It’s a simple routine and I don’t mind it. Some days are slower than others and I just sit on my stool and read the local news. Bicameral Sweet is just a part of my life here in Katraj. I’ve seen the street change but the shop stays the same.
