Our place is tucked away on Kasara Street in the third lane. It’s Reay Road, so it’s got that old industrial feel to it. Being next to the Bank of India helps people find the spot, otherwise, they might miss the turn. We spend the morning opening up the shutters and dusting off the counters. There’s a lot of sitting around waiting for the gold smiths to finish their parts or talking to people about what they want for a wedding. We’ve been at 43/2 for a good bit of time. The street is narrow and you have to watch out for the bikes. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a minute and we just sit there in the dark until the backup kicks in. It’s not like those big malls with air conditioning everywhere. We just have our small shop and our regular people who know where to find us. Reay Road can be quite a walk if you’re coming from the station. We drink a lot of chai during the day. Sometimes we argue about the designs, but usually, we just get on with it. It’s a quiet life here most of the time, except when the festivals come around and everyone wants their stuff at the same time. We just keep the books straight and make sure the pieces are polished up before they go out. It's a lot of small details to keep track of, but we've been doing it this way for years now.
