Ponkathir Women Farmers Producer Company Limited

We are a group of women farmers based out of Muthalamada in Palakkad. Our main spot is at 10/728A in Urkulamkadu, which is near the Govindpuram post office. We decided to come together as Ponkathir because it made sense to work as a group rather than all on our own. Farming in Palakkad can be tough with the heat, but we manage by helping each other out. We grow various things depending on the season and then we figure out how to sell them together. It started out small, just a few neighbors talking over the fence, and now we are a registered producer company. We still meet up in the same informal way, though. Our office isn't much more than a place to keep our supplies and meet to discuss the next harvest. We handle everything from the seeds to the final sales. It's good because it gives us more control over what we do. We aren't experts in business, but we know how to work the land and we know what people in our community want to buy. There are many of us involved now, and we all bring something different to the table. Most days you'll find us out in the fields at Moochamkundu. We are just local women trying to make a living and support our families through the work we’ve always known. It’s hard work, but we are proud of what we do together in the village.
