About Northern Art Centre – Art & Craft in New Delhi
If you have ever been to the Tibetan Market on Janpath, you know how crowded it gets. We are at shop number 20, and it is a small space, even for this market. There are things hanging from the ceiling and piled up on every shelf. You have to walk carefully so you don't knock anything over. It is always a bit dusty because of all the people walking past outside and the wind blowing through the stalls. We spend a lot of our time just moving things around to make room for new items that come in. The market has a very specific smell—a mix of old wood, fabric, and whatever the street food vendors are making nearby. It is not a quiet place to work. You hear people bargaining and the general roar of Janpath all day long. We don't have a big staff, just a couple of us who know where the specific pieces are hidden in the back corners. Sometimes we sit out front on small stools when it’s not too busy, just watching the crowds go by. It’s a bit of a squeeze inside, and the lighting isn't the best, but it has been our spot for a long time. We just keep the doors open and wait to see who wanders in from the sidewalk looking for something interesting to take home or just to look at for a bit.
