Sri Swamy Vivekananda Vidya Mandir English Medium School sits right at 148 Kanakagiri in Mysore. Vidyaranyapuram is a quiet enough area, though mornings are always a bit of a rush. We’ve been operating out of this building for years. It’s a solid place with high ceilings and heavy doors that sometimes creak when the wind blows. We don’t have a big corporate office or anything like that. It’s just us teachers and the staff trying to keep the place running smoothly. The classrooms are filled with wooden benches that have seen a lot of students over time. We have a small playground where the kids play kabaddi or just run around until they get dusty. Sometimes the power goes out and we just open the windows wider. Mysore weather is usually okay, so it’s not too bad. Parents come by often to ask about marks or just to chat about how their children are behaving. We try to keep things simple here. There isn’t a lot of fluff. We focus on the textbooks and making sure the kids know their math and English. Every morning we start with a small assembly. It’s a bit crowded when everyone stands together, but it feels like a community. We just want the kids to pass their exams and grow up to be decent people without making too much of a fuss about it. We’ve been here long enough that now we see the children of our old students coming in.
