My family has been running Spice N Herb at 2/798 in the Fort area for a while now. It’s an old part of town, and our building shows its age, but it works for what we do. Mostly, we deal in the dry things people need for their daily cooking. It's a small place, and sometimes the smell of everything mixed together is quite strong when you first walk in the door. We don’t have a fancy display or anything like that. There are just shelves with glass jars and some larger sacks on the floor that we haven't found a better spot for yet. Most of the time, it’s just me or my cousin behind the counter. We spend a lot of the day weighing things out and tying up small bags with twine. The floor is concrete and gets a bit dusty from the powders, but we sweep it when we can at the end of the day. Regulars from the neighborhood come by for their usual bits. We don't really bother with big signs or advertisements. People just know where we are. It’s a simple setup. If the door is open, we’re here. Sometimes we run out of something and have to wait for the next delivery, which can take a few days. We don't have a computer system, just a notebook where we write things down. It’s not the most modern way, but it’s how we’ve always handled things here at the Fort.
