It is pretty early when we open up Shop No 8 here in the Saveera building. Being right in the middle of the GIDC Industrial Estate in Andheri West means the mornings are always a bit of a rush. You can hear the buses pulling up at the Veera Desai Bus Stop just across the road, and that usually brings in the first wave of people looking for bread or milk before they start their shifts. It is not a very big place, just your typical local store with shelves that are maybe a bit too crowded. We spend a lot of time just moving crates around and making sure the floor is swept. Sometimes the dust from the industrial area gets inside, so it’s a constant job keeping things tidy. We have been here for a while now, and you get to know the faces of the workers who come in every single day. The ceiling fan wobbles a little bit when it's on high speed, but it keeps the heat away while we weigh out grains or restock the fridge. There is no fancy decoration here, just rows of snacks and household stuff that people need. It gets cramped when more than three people are inside at once, but we manage. Most of the day is just simple work, checking the stock and talking to the delivery guys who struggle to find parking in this narrow lane. It’s just how things are around here.
