Shreya Fashion Export is down on the ground floor of Building C/26 in the Dhanraj Mill Compound. It’s part of the Dhanlaxmi Co-operative Society. If you know Lower Parel, you know how these old mill compounds are. They’ve got a lot of character but they can be a bit of a maze if you aren't used to them. We’re in Unit No. 9, which is handy because we don’t have to deal with any stairs. The ceiling is high, which is nice, but it can get a bit warm in the afternoons. We use the space for everything from cutting the fabric to the final packing. It’s a lot of manual work and we stay pretty busy. You can hear the sounds of the other businesses in the compound all day long. There’s always someone shouting for a delivery or the sound of a machine running next door. We’ve got a small corner for the office stuff, but most of the room is taken up by the clothes. We don't have a big marketing department or anyone to write fancy things about us. We’re just a group of people making sure the exports go out on time. Sometimes we stay late when a deadline is coming up. It’s not glamorous, but it’s our life and we’re used to the noise and the pace of the mill area. We just keep working through the pile of fabric on the table.
