Our place, Shree Krishna Dyeing And Printing Works, is located at B 4 near the Sher A Punjab bus stop in Girgaon. It’s a busy spot because of the buses coming and going all day. You can hear the conductors shouting the various routes right through our windows. Inside, it’s a different world. There are large vats and long tables for the printing work. The floors are usually a bit damp because of the dyeing process, so we all wear rubber slippers to keep from slipping. It’s messy work. Your hands get stained with different colors that take days to wash off completely. My clothes usually have spots of ink on them too. We’ve been doing this for a long time in Girgaon. The building is old and the walls could definitely use a fresh coat of paint, but the work we do inside is what really matters. We don't have a computer system to track everything; we just use a big notebook and a black pen. It works for us. When the weather is humid, the fabric takes forever to dry, which can be quite frustrating for everyone. We hang things up on lines across the ceiling to save space. It’s a lot of manual labor, lifting heavy wet cloth and moving it around. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop in the city. We just want to finish the orders we have and keep the machines running for another day of work.
