S. Y. Clothings

S. Y. Clothings is located up on the fourth floor of the Sheetal building. You can find us at 404, Sheetal, in Sarvodaya Nagar, over in Mulund West. Getting up those stairs with heavy rolls of fabric is a real workout every single morning. Mumbai is always loud and busy, but up here in room 404, it is mostly just the sound of the sewing machines clicking away. We have a few windows that look out over the neighborhood rooftops. It gets quite hot in the afternoons when the sun hits the glass, so we keep the ceiling fans on full blast all day. There is always a pile of cloth somewhere waiting to be cut or folded. We make all sorts of clothes depending on what the orders are for that week. We do not have a receptionist or a lobby. If someone knocks on the door, one of us just gets up from their machine to see who it is. Usually, it is just the delivery guy or someone from the office next door. We eat our lunch together on a small wooden table we kept in the back corner. The space is a bit cramped because of all the cardboard boxes packed and ready to go out to the shops. We have been in this building for a long time now. We do not spend money on fancy rugs or bright lights. We just need enough light to see the needles and the thread.
