Our little setup is located at 34, Sawant Chawl on Bhardawadi Road in Amboli, Andheri West. It is right in the middle of a busy residential and commercial area. We do small-scale manufacturing here. The space is quite tight because we have to fit the machines and the raw materials all in one room. Most of the people working here are family members or neighbors we have known for years. We make different types of items depending on the orders we get. It is often quite hot inside because the ceiling is low, and we only have one small window at the back. We use a lot of manual tools and old-fashioned techniques that we learned from our fathers. The noise of the street outside blends in with the sounds of our work. We don't have any corporate branding or a fancy logo on the wall. There is just a small calendar and a picture of our family. Sometimes we have to move the finished boxes out onto the pavement to make room to move around inside. It is a very humble way of working, but we are used to it. We drink water from a large earthen pot in the corner which stays surprisingly cool. We don't spend money on advertising; people just know we are here in the chawl. It is a busy life but we are happy to have the work coming in from the city.
