Marg in Lower Parel means there is always a lot of noise and people rushing around. The industrial estate is a maze of different businesses, and our unit is just one of many. You can hear the hum of the machines through the walls almost all day long. The air smells like fresh cotton and a bit of machine oil. We have these big windows, but they mostly look out at other grey buildings. It is a practical space for what we do. We have a lot of racks filled with different knit pieces and stacks of fabric waiting to be cut. The lift in this building is old and slow, so we often just take the stairs if we aren't carrying anything heavy. Our desks are covered in thread clippings and tea mugs. It is not the kind of place you see in magazines, but it is where we spend our lives. We just focus on the needles and the thread and making sure the sizes are what they should be. Most of us have been working here together for years, so we don't need to say much to get the job done. It gets pretty hot in the summer but we just open the doors and keep going.
