L&T Finance Holdings

L&T House is located down in Ballard Estate, on NM Marg. It’s one of those old Mumbai areas with the big stone buildings and wide streets. The architecture around here is something else, very different from the new glass towers. Inside, it’s a lot of paperwork and people on computers. Being in the finance side of things means we are always looking at numbers. The atmosphere is usually quite focused. We get a lot of people walking in from the street asking for directions or about their accounts. The walk from the station in the morning is a bit of a trek, but the breeze from the sea helps. We have a lot of history in this building. The hallways are high and the windows are large. Lunchtime is when everyone heads out to the local sandwich stalls or small cafes tucked in the lanes. It’s a busy place but it has a slow, heavy feeling because of the old walls. We don't use much jargon when we talk among ourselves. It’s just about getting the entries right and making sure the files are where they belong. The day ends when the light starts to fade over the estate. We lock up and join the crowd heading back to the trains. It’s a solid place to work, even if the stairs are a bit steep. There is always something to do and the phones never stop ringing until very late. We mostly just drink a lot of tea.
