We are located on the third floor of the Ajay Deep building, which is right on Perin Nariman Street in the Fort area. This part of Mumbai is very old and has a lot of character, with narrow streets and buildings that have been around for a long time. Climbing up to the third floor every day keeps us fit, as the stairs are a bit steep. The office is at number 240/242, and it has high ceilings like many of the older structures in Fort. We handle fashion work here, so there is always a lot of measuring and cutting going on. The windows let in a bit of the street noise, including the honking of cars and the shouts of vendors from below. It’s a very energetic place to work. Our tables are usually covered with sketches and bits of thread. We don’t have much in the way of decoration; the walls are mostly covered with calendars and notes we’ve pinned up over the months. Sometimes the dust from the street gets in, so we have to wipe down the workstations every morning before we start. The area is full of history, and we like being part of it, even if the building itself feels a little tired sometimes. We usually head out to one of the small cafes nearby when we need a break from the sewing and the fabric. It is just the reality of working in South Mumbai.
