If you come down to Old Hanuman Lane in Kalbadevi, you'll find us on the first floor of building 117/119. Shop No. 22 is where Ashika Textile India Pvt. Ltd. runs from. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs, especially if you’re carrying rolls of fabric, but that’s just how things are in this part of town. The lane outside is always crowded with people and handcarts, so getting stuff in and out takes a lot of patience. Inside the shop, there are piles of cloth everywhere. We try to keep it organized, but when it’s busy, things tend to get a bit messy on the tables. Someone is usually on the phone talking to a supplier or a customer while another person is measuring out fabric for an order. It’s a lot of manual work every day. We deal with textiles all day long and it never really stops. Sometimes the light in the shop isn't great, but we know our stock well enough by touch. The fan hums in the corner and there’s always a bit of dust from the threads in the air. We’ve been in this spot for a good bit now. Most of the other shopkeepers around here are friends we see every morning. It’s a tight space, but we make it work for us. We don't have a big showroom, just the shop where the actual business happens. Lunch usually happens right at the desk between orders. It’s just how we operate day to day here.
