Down in Andheri East, specifically at the Hema Industrial Estate, you’ll find Jona Apparels. We are tucked away in the Gidc Makarpura area, specifically near the Tulsivan Ghb Colony. It’s a busy part of the city, lots of trucks moving in and out, and the noise from the other units is constant. Our space, number 109, is usually filled with the sound of sewing machines and people moving boxes around. There is always a layer of lint on everything, no matter how much we sweep. We deal with fabrics and finished clothes all day long. Sometimes the shipments are late, or the dye isn't quite the right shade, and we have to scramble to fix it. It’s not a glamorous job, but it’s what we know. The office part is just a small corner with a desk and a phone that never seems to stop ringing. We eat our lunches together when we can find a clean spot to sit. The air is thick with the smell of steam from the irons. We don’t have time for fancy meetings or long speeches. We just look at the orders, check the stitching, and get the bundles ready to go out. It’s hard work, especially when the heat in Mumbai gets bad, but we’ve been doing this for a while and we have a rhythm down. It’s just us, the machines, and a lot of thread. It gets dusty, but it’s our trade.
