Our place, Dia Man Exports, is on the first floor of Pramod Industrial Estate in Goregaon East. Being right off the Western Express Highway means we hear the traffic all day long. It’s a constant hum of cars and trucks. We’ve been in this building for quite a while now. The elevator is old and sometimes we just take the stairs to save time. Inside, it’s mostly workstations and storage bins. We deal with specialized export items, so everything has to be weighed and logged very carefully. It’s a lot of sitting under bright lights and looking at small parts through magnifying glasses. Our eyes get tired by the end of the day, so we take plenty of tea breaks. There’s a small balcony where we keep some plants, though they don't grow very well with all the soot from the highway. We aren't a big corporate office with fancy carpet. The floors are plain concrete and the walls could probably use a new coat of paint. We have a tight-knit group of workers here. We celebrate birthdays with sweets from the shop downstairs and complain about the commute during the monsoon season when the roads flood. We just try to do our work correctly and get the shipments out without any mistakes. It’s a simple business but it keeps us all going.
