If you go down 90 Feet Road in Dharavi and look near the Sansar Hotel, you’ll find Javed Garments. This area is always bustling with people and the sound of machines. Our shop is a busy place where we handle all sorts of clothing items. We have stacks of fabric in different colors leaning against the walls and several sewing machines that seem to never stop running. The air is often filled with the smell of new cloth and the steam from the heavy irons we use. We work mostly on shirts and trousers, making sure the stitching is done right before they get packed into plastic bags. It’s a small space, so we have to be very organized with how we stack the finished goods. There are always people coming in and out, whether it’s suppliers bringing in new thread or customers picking up their orders. The noise from 90 Feet Road is constant, but it gives the place a lot of energy. We don’t have any fancy displays; the clothes are just piled up on the counters or hanging from simple racks. It’s hard work and the days are long, but we’ve been doing this for years. Most of our workers live nearby, so it feels like a real local operation. We just focus on getting the garments finished and out the door so we can start on the next batch for the week.
