D. L. Gandhi & Sons

D. L. Gandhi & Sons is over on Maulana Azad Road, right near the J.J. Hospital in Nagpada. Being so close to the hospital means there’s always an ambulance siren or a lot of traffic passing by the front door. Our shop is at number 357, and it’s a pretty straightforward place. We’ve got the usual counters and some stools for people to sit on while they wait. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we haven't really found the time to move everything out of the way to get it done. It gets quite busy in the afternoons when the sun is hitting the pavement outside, so we try to keep the door open to get a bit of a breeze, even if it brings in some of the city noise. We mostly deal with folks from around the neighborhood or people visiting the hospital who happen to see our sign. There’s a lot of walking back and forth behind the counter to pull out different items from the drawers. We don't use any fancy computer systems for everything; a lot of it is still written down in the big books we keep by the register. It’s just how we’ve always managed things. The floor is that old tile that stays relatively cool, which is nice in the summer. We’re just here doing our work and keeping the shop going from morning until the sun goes down.
