Ankita Apparel is based at No. 2B Patil Chawl on Besant Road. We are quite close to the Sai Baba Mandir in Khotwadi, Santacruz West. Working in a chawl means we are right in the heart of the community, and there is always something going on outside our door. The sound of the temple bells and the people walking by on Besant Road is just part of our daily background music. Inside our workspace, you will find piles of fabric, thread rolls, and the constant rhythmic sound of sewing machines running. It is a bit cramped because we have to fit in the cutting tables and the finished garments, but we make it work. The light isn't always the best, so we have extra lamps over the workstations to see the stitching clearly. Most of us have been working with textiles for years, so we just get on with the cutting and sewing without needing much direction. It gets quite hot in the afternoons, so we keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes through the alley. We are a small local operation, and most of the people who work here live nearby. We don't have a showroom, just the workshop where we produce the clothes. It is hard work and the hours can be long, but we like being part of this neighborhood in Santacruz.
