Our warehouse is at number 6, Abdul Sattar, right on Fitwala Road. It’s quite close to the Elphinstone Station on the west side, which makes it easy for the staff to get to work, even if the traffic is a mess. At Ambrosia Fruits & Veg., we deal with exactly what the name says. Every morning starts early, usually before the sun is even up, when the crates start arriving. We spend the day sorting through mangoes, leafy greens, and whatever else is in season. It smells like a garden in here most of the time, though things can get messy when a crate of tomatoes gets crushed. We aren't some big, faceless corporation. We’re just a group of people who know how to tell if a melon is ripe or if the spinach is wilted. The office is tucked away in a corner with a view of the loading bay. We keep the fans running high because it gets stuffy with all the produce stacked up. Sometimes we disagree on how to stack the crates, but we figure it out. It’s a fast-paced job because fresh food doesn't wait for anyone. We try to get everything out the door as quick as we can. It’s hard work, and our backs ache by evening, but it’s good to see the trucks leave full.
