We spend most of our time inside the Dhagad Industrial Area on Walbhat Road, usually surrounded by stacks of fabric and half-packed boxes. The noise from the machines is pretty constant, especially when we have a big export deadline coming up. It gets quite hot in the warehouse during the summer months, but we just keep the fans going and drink plenty of tea. The trucks start lining up outside quite early, and sometimes the traffic on Walbhat Road makes it hard for anyone to get in or out. Our workspace isn't anything fancy to look at, just concrete floors and rows of sewing stations that have seen better days. We have piles of buttons and zippers in plastic bins tucked into every corner. Most of the staff live nearby and we have all worked together for a long time now. We don't spend much time on fancy decorations because there is always another shipment of apparel that needs to be checked and tagged. It is a lot of repetitive work, counting items and making sure the labels are stitched on straight before things get loaded onto the containers. Sometimes the power cuts out and we just sit around and talk until it comes back on. It’s just how things go here in this part of the industrial estate.
