Our place is located in the Jyangra area of Kolkata, right on Hatiara Road near Kalitala. It’s a busy part of the city and there’s always something going on outside our doors. We started Nabanna because we wanted a place where people could get a proper meal without feeling like they’re in a cold, modern mall. The building itself is nothing special to look at from the outside, but inside we try to keep it comfortable. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen making sure the spices are right. Bengali food takes time if you want to do it properly, so we don't rush things. Sometimes the wait is a bit long when we’re full, but our customers usually understand. We see a lot of families coming in on the weekends. It’s nice to hear the kids running around and the adults talking loudly over their fish curry. We’re close to the Kalitala landmark, so people use that to find us. The humidity in Kolkata can be tough in the kitchen, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. We aren't trying to be the most famous spot in town. We just want to be the place where the neighbors feel okay coming in their casual clothes for a quick bite or a long lunch. It’s a local business run by local people who know the area well.
