Down here on Becharam Chatterjee Road in Behala, life moves at its own frantic pace. The Kolkata traffic is something we have to deal with every single morning, especially around the Behala crossing where everything seems to stop for no particular reason. Our office is at 125/C, and it is a typical building for this part of the city. It has that old-school Kolkata character with high ceilings and walls that have seen a lot of monsoons over the years. Inside the office, we just go about our business without much fuss or decoration. There is always the sound of rickshaws honking and the smell of street food from the vendors right outside the gate. We don’t have central air conditioning that works perfectly all the time, so the fans are always on full blast during the humid months. Most of us have been working here for quite a while, so we know which desk has the best light and which drawer always gets stuck when the weather is too damp. Lunch is usually something bought from the local stalls or brought in a steel container from home. We aren't trying to impress anyone with a polished corporate image. We just have a job to do and we do it from this corner of South Kolkata. It is a bit crowded and the stairs are narrow, but it is home for us during the day. We just join the crowd heading back home.
