Jugnu Hair Cutting Salon

Our little shop sits right on the ground floor along Hatiara Road in Kolkata. We are very close to the Hatiara Mothersa School, so we hear the kids shouting and playing all day long. It makes the place feel alive. Being on the ground floor is good because people can just step right in from the street without climbing any stairs. It gets quite dusty with all the bikes and rickshaws going past, so we are always sweeping the floor to keep it tidy. We started Jugnu Hair Cutting Salon because this is what we know how to do. The neighborhood is mostly families and working men who need a decent haircut before they go to their jobs. During the rainy season, the water sometimes splashes near the door, but we just put out a mat and keep going. We have a few chairs and some sharp tools. It’s not the kind of place where you get fancy coffee, but there is a tea stall nearby if anyone is thirsty. We don’t really do any big advertisements. People just see the shop when they are walking their children to school or coming back from the market. I like talking to the elders who have lived in this part of Kolkata for forty years. They have some good stories to tell while I am working on their hair. It is just a normal business for normal people living their lives around here.
