Unlike a lot of other agrotech groups, our main address is actually at Flat 1A on Golf Club Road in Kolkata. It’s a bit strange, maybe, to have an agrotech business based in the city, but this is where we handle the administrative side of Gcm Agrotech Llp. We spend a lot of time on the phone or on the computer, connecting with people out in the rural areas of West Bengal. Outside the window, you hear the city traffic and the noise of Tollygunge, but inside we’re mostly thinking about soil health and crop yields. It’s a small flat, not some big glassy office building. We have maps on the walls and folders stacked high on the tables. Even though we are based in the 700033 zip code, our hearts are really in the fields. We have to balance the fast pace of Kolkata with the slower, seasonal pace of the farming world. It’s a lot of back-and-forth, traveling out to the districts and then coming back here to sort out the logistics and the legalities. We don't have a marketing department or a fancy lobby. It’s just a few of us working out of an apartment, trying to make sure the technical side of farming gets the attention it needs. It can get a bit cramped with all the paperwork and sample bags, but it works for us and keeps the overhead low. We are just a small team in the city.
