Biswash Saloon

Biswash Saloon is located on the ground floor on Groungo Nager Main Road. It is a very busy street here in Kolkata, especially because we are so near the Groungonager Post Office. You can hear the big buses and the loud horns all day long from inside the shop. We have a simple glass front so we can see everyone passing by on the sidewalk. Inside, the walls are painted a light color that has faded and yellowed over the years. We have three chairs for customers but usually only two are working at any given time. The post office workers often come in during their lunch breaks or right after they finish their shifts for the day. We’ve got a small radio that plays the local FM stations while we work. It helps pass the time during the hours when things are slow. The floor is made of old stone and it’s easy enough to sweep up the hair at the end of a cut. We keep the water in plastic mugs for the shaves instead of fancy dispensers. It’s not a high-end setup at all, just a basic place for a haircut. The main road is always dusty, so we have to wipe down the wooden counters every few hours to keep the dust off. We know the neighbors well and often share news about what is happening in our street. Kolkata is a crowded city and our little corner here feels like home to us.
