Apurba Saloon

This shop is located in Adarsha Pally, which is part of the Gouranga Nagar area in Kolkata. It is right on Adarsha Pally Road. I have been working here for quite a while, and the neighborhood has changed a lot, but my shop stays mostly the same. It is a small place with just enough room for two people to get their hair done at once. The light comes in through the front door mostly. I have a few old pictures of famous actors on the walls to give people ideas, but most customers just ask for a short cut. The sink in the back leaks a little bit, so I keep a bucket under it. It is just one of those things you get used to. People from all over Gouranga Nagar come by, especially on their way home from the market. We talk about local news and the price of fish while I work. I use a simple spray bottle and a sharp razor. The floor is made of old stone that has worn down over the years where I stand. It is a quiet life here. I like the routine of opening up, cleaning the combs, and seeing who walks in. There is no rush here. If someone is waiting, they just sit on the bench and read the paper. It is a humble place for the people of Adarsha Pally. I make sure to lock up carefully every evening before heading home.
