R S N Balika I College is out here in Village Lakhanpur, near Meja Road in Allahabad. It’s a quiet spot compared to the city, which is nice for the students. We focus on teaching the girls from the surrounding villages. Most of them travel a fair distance to get here every morning. The building is simple and we try to keep it clean, though the dust from the road always finds its way in. We have a small office where we keep all the records and files. It’s usually piled high with papers because there is always something to sign or stamp. The teachers are locals mostly, so they understand the families around here. We don’t have a big marketing budget or anything like that. Word just spreads from one family to another. During the exams, the whole place gets very serious and quiet, which is a big change from the usual lunch break noise. We have a few benches outside where the girls sit and talk. It’s not a grand institution with marble floors, just a solid place for learning. We make do with what we have and focus on getting through the syllabus each term. It is a humble place, but it serves its purpose for the community here in Meja Road. We just keep working hard to make sure the girls get their education properly every year.
