About Jain Shwetamber Moorti Kala Kendra – Art & Craft in Jaipur
This workshop, Jain Shwetamber Moorti Kala Kendra, has been at 1975 Khazane Walon Ka Rasta for a long time. If you know Jaipur, you know this street is where most of the marble work happens. We are right by the 4th crossing. It’s a tight space, but it’s where we do all the carving. My father and grandfather did this before me, and now we are just continuing that. There’s always dust everywhere because of the marble cutting, so we’re used to it. We don't really have a big office or anything. It's just the workshop and a small area where we sit and talk. Making moortis takes a lot of patience. Sometimes a piece takes weeks, and other times it's quicker. We work with different types of stone, mostly white marble. People come here from all over to see the work. The lane is quite narrow, so parking is always a headache for anyone visiting us. We spend our days with chisels and hammers. It’s noisy, but you get used to the sound of stone being worked on. We don’t do much advertising. People usually find us through word of mouth or just by walking past the shop. It’s hard work, and our hands are always rough, but it’s what we know how to do. We just keep doing the same work every day, one statue at a time. It's a simple life here in the old city.
