Delhi Sweets

We've been here on Tonk Road at G 2 for a while now. Most mornings start early, usually before the sun is even fully up, just to get the sugar syrups and the milk boiling. It gets quite loud outside with the traffic, but inside it smells like cardamom and ghee. We aren't a big place, just a small shop where people stop by on their way home to pick up a box of laddoos or some barfi for their kids. Sometimes the counter gets a bit sticky when it's busy, but we try to keep up with the rush. We make everything in the back. It’s not fancy. The benches are old and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but the stove is always going. People know us by name around here. We don’t really do much advertising or anything like that. If someone likes the gulab jamuns, they tell their neighbor and that’s how we stay busy. My father used to handle the accounts, and now I mostly look after things with a couple of helpers. It's hard work being on your feet all day near the hot pans, especially in the summer heat of Jaipur. But seeing someone take that first bite and smile makes the long hours feel okay. We just keep doing what we know, day after day, making sure the milk is fresh and the sweets are ready for whoever walks through the door. We hope to stay here a long time.
