You can find us at 9 Hrishikesh Ghosh Lane in Salkia. It’s a narrow lane, like many in this part of Howrah, and things can get tight when people are passing by. Salkia Hindu School is one of those places that feels like it’s been part of the street forever. The walls are thick and the ceilings are high, which helps a bit with the heat. We have a lot of students coming in every day from all the surrounding lanes. It gets very busy around 10 am when classes start. The staff room is always full of old registers, tea cups, and lunch boxes. We try to keep the place tidy, but with so many kids, there’s always a bit of dust or a stray piece of paper on the floor. We have a small courtyard where everyone gathers for the morning start. It’s not a quiet place, especially when the bell rings for lunch break. We talk to the parents at the gate, mostly about small things like a lost sweater, a forgotten notebook, or upcoming holidays. The electricity goes off sometimes, and we just open the windows wider to get some air. We teach the usual subjects, nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. Most of us grew up around here or have lived in Howrah for many years. We know the local shops and the shortcut to the main road. It’s just a neighborhood school. We don’t have big advertisements. People just know we are here on the lane. We spend our days grading papers and making sure kids stay in their seats until the end.
