Over in Kalgaon, things are pretty simple, and that is how we like it at Kamalvan Farmers Producer Company Limited. We use Laxman Ingole’s place as our home base. It’s located in the Hingoli district, a place where you can’t go far without seeing someone you know. We decided to form this company because we wanted to have a bit more control over our own lives. Farming is a gamble, and we figured having a group might help even the odds a little bit. We aren't trying to impress anyone with big talk or fancy clothes. Most of us show up to the office with mud on our boots, straight from the fields. Hingoli can be a bit isolated, so we have to rely on each other more than people in the big cities do. We talk about the rain, the cost of labor, and whose tractor is currently broken down. Our meetings aren't very formal. We just sit around and talk about what needs to be done for the next month. There are no missions or big statements here, just the reality of trying to grow something and sell it for a decent price. It’s a lot of long hours and sometimes we wonder why we do it, but then the harvest comes in and it all makes sense. We are just local farmers in Kalgaon doing the best we can with what we’ve got.
