Jai Steels is over in South City, specifically at House No-511. There is a big car showroom nearby that everyone uses to find us. Working with steel is heavy and loud. We spend our days moving pipes and sheets around the yard. The South City area is growing, so there is always some construction noise in the background. My hands are usually rough from handling the metal, and we go through work gloves pretty fast. We don’t have a fancy showroom like the car place next door. Our space is filled with stacks of iron and steel that we have to sort through every morning. It gets really hot in the summer because the metal holds the heat. We keep a big fan running, but it doesn't do much. Usually, a few of us are here by eight to start unloading the trucks. The inventory is always changing, so we have to keep a close eye on the stock levels. People come in looking for specific lengths and we have to cut them right there. It’s hard work and it makes your back ache by the end of the day. We drink a lot of water and try to stay out of the direct sun when we can. The neighbors are mostly used to the clanging sounds by now. It’s just a regular steel yard where we get things done and go home tired. We’ve been at this spot for years and everyone around here knows the routine.
