Our factory is located out in Kinginimattom, near Kolencherry in Ernakulam. It’s a bit of a drive from the main city, which is nice because it’s quieter out here. We make various sweets and confectionery items. The air inside the building usually smells like sugar or whatever we are boiling that day. It’s a local operation, and most of the people working here live just a few minutes away. We don’t have a fancy corporate office with a receptionist. Usually, if you walk in, you’ll just see people in hairnets working the machines or packing bags. We started J. J. Confectionery because we knew how to make things people like to eat. It’s not complicated. We have some old machines that we’ve learned to fix ourselves when they break down. The rainy season in Kerala can be a bit much, sometimes making the roads around the P.O. a bit muddy, but we keep the trucks moving. We don’t really care about being the biggest company around. We just want to make sure the batches come out right and the local shops get their stock on time. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and watching the temperature gauges. We take pride in just being a steady business that provides jobs for the village folks and keeps the sugar boiling.
