Baltikra Kisan Producer Company Limited is based right here in Belawa Bazar Batikra, out of the house at 134. It’s Urmila Ray and Jitendra Nath Rai’s place, and you can usually find someone around if you stop by. We started this because things were getting hard for small farmers in Deoria. Most of us grew up in these fields, so we know how the soil behaves and what happens when the rain doesn't come on time. It is not some fancy office with glass windows, just a regular house where we keep the books and talk about seeds. People from the village walk in all day long. Sometimes we are talking about prices, and other times we are just complaining about the heat or the road conditions. We try to help everyone get their crops to market without too much trouble. It is a lot of work, and the paperwork can be a headache sometimes, but it’s better than trying to do it all alone. We handle a bit of everything, from buying fertilizer to figuring out where the trucks are going. There is always a lot of noise and people moving about. We aren't trying to be big shots, just local people looking out for each other. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to finish work by candlelight, but that’s just how it is here. It’s a simple life, and we like it that way.
