Our shop, Ram Chander Radhey Shyam, is situated at 68/1 on the Narela Main Road in Bhorgarh. We’ve been here for many years and the name on the board is the same one our father put up. It’s a big, open space where we deal with bulk goods and general supplies for the area. The floor is made of old stone and it’s seen a lot of heavy sacks dragged across it over the decades. We open the doors early when the air is still a bit cool, before the heavy trucks start making the road outside noisy and dusty. We don't have a computer to keep track of things; instead, we use these big red ledgers where we write everything down by hand. It takes longer but it’s the way we know how to do things. The shop doesn't have any fancy decorations or soft chairs. We use wooden benches and sometimes we just sit on the crates when we’re tired. There’s a ceiling fan that squeaks a bit, but it’s been working for fifteen years so we don't want to replace it. Most of our customers are people we have known for a lifetime, and we often share a glass of tea while we talk about the harvest or the prices. It’s a very traditional way of working and we like it that way. We don't try to compete with the big modern stores because we know our neighbors and they know they can trust us.
