Gupta Bedding House

Gupta Bedding House is located on Laxmi Narain Street, number 1831, right in the heart of Paharganj. The street is very narrow and crowded with locals and tourists, so our shop always feels a bit tucked away. Inside, you will see piles of cotton and different types of fabrics everywhere. We spend our days stuffing pillows and sewing together heavy quilts, especially when the winter starts to arrive in Delhi. There is always a layer of fine cotton dust on the counters and the floor, no matter how much we sweep. The old sewing machine has a specific rhythm to it that I’ve listened to for years. People come to us from the surrounding lanes when their old mattresses get lumpy or when they need something new for a guest staying over. We don't have a big fancy showroom, just this one room filled with materials and finished goods. My father started this place, and I’ve been sitting here since I was a teenager. We talk to the travelers who get lost looking for their hotels and sometimes we just watch the world go by from the front step. It is a slow kind of work compared to the rush outside on the main road. We use our hands for most things and we take pride in the fact that a quilt we make will last for many years in someone's home.
